Democratisation Process
There has been regular, free and fair elections of leaders
Freedom of speech, expression, press etc
Promotion of the maginalised groups
Independence of the judiciary, Parliament and executive
Strengthening of civic socially
Increased political awareness of the civil society
Up-holding the principal of individual merit. This allows / enables individuals to stand at any electable positions.
(b) The Movement under Museveni has given political direction and hope for Uganda.
ECONOMIC
Liberalisation of the Economy:
- One can now import/export, produce/sell without any interference from government.
- Goods and services are brought nearer to the people.
- Created employment.
Privatisation:
- Freed resourced to be used for other services e.g. Entandikwa, UPE.
- Created more jobs, more incomes, also provides services nearer to the people.
- It greatly improved on communication in terms of telecommunications, mobile phones and private radio stations.
- Promoted regional trade.
- Availability of goods, including essential commodities.
Increased investment:
Uganda Investment Authority Licensed 2.171 new enterprises worth US$4.761 billions. So far 50% of the enterprises have taken off and created 165,819 new jobs. Through strategic intervention in areas like textiles, leather world, mineral extractions and commercial large-scale farming, more jobs will be created.
Created efficiency in production and increased/promoted Industrialisation.
Removed scarcity of good and black markets
Created more utilities
Has acted as a key factor in the widening of the tax base
There has been modernisation of agriculture e.g. improved seeds and animals
Private investments has grown from 5.4% of GDP to 13%
Inflation has been controlled to an average of 5.7%
Government expenditure has gone up since 1986 from9% of GDP to 22% in 1999.
The percentage of houses with iron roofs increased from 33% in 1991 to 59% in 1999.
