Makerere awards H.E. Mwai Kibaki a doctorate

President Yoweri Museveni commended Makerere University officials for awarding President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

The President paid his tribute today at Makerere University Freedom Square during the awarding ceremony that was presided over by the Chancellor of Makerere University, Professor Mondo Kagonyera.

The award to President Mwai Kibaki by Makerere University is in recognition of the distinguished academic and leadership achievements; contribution to public life; laudable economic, educational, gender reforms and transformation to empower women across the social and political spheres.

President Museveni congratulated President Kibaki upon the special recognition. He was happy to note that the number and speed of innovations at the University has increased. He paid special tribute to the young students and lecturers of the Institute of Technology for launching the Kiira electric car. He applauded them for utilizing well the funds which Government gave them in the enterprising venture.

He announced that government is to provide sh.200 million to promote the Departments of Science as well as Food and Technology. Mr. Museveni expressed pleasure to note that the 2 Departments have played a big role in the processing of millet and goose berries (entuntunu).

The President also commended lecturers from the Department of Languages who have assisted him in writing a Runyankore-Rukiga dictionary. He saluted Prof. Vanacious Baryamureeba for spear-heading the process of honouring President Kibaki and noted that by honoring the visiting President of Kenya, the University is doing a lot of work for academic excellence. He called on the University officials to utilize the alumni for the development of the institution.

In his acceptance speech, President Kibaki thanked the government and people of Uganda for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded to him and his delegation since his arrival in the country.

He said that the Doctorate awarded to him is a great honor to him, his family and country Kenya. He noted that the honor is a reflection of the cordial relations being enjoyed between the people of Kenya and Uganda adding that Uganda is the number one trading partner with Kenya.

The Kenyan leader was pleased to note that many of his leadership skills were developed and nurtured at Makerere University. He said that universities have the task of transforming the African countries adding that the process of transformation of Africa will be faster with the collaboration of the universities on the continent.

President Mwai Kibaki said that the development of an electric car by Makerere University should be emulated as a good example for the cause of development and transformation. He stressed that Africa must industrialize and improve the welfare of the people quickly in order to fully appreciate the efforts expended in development.

President Mwai Kibaki also challenged the young people to put their countries’ needs above all other interests.

The 2 Presidents also jointly inaugurated the Constituent Colleges of Makerere University.
