“Uganda can spur rapid growth if investors are not delayed” - President

Monday 17th September 2012

President Yoweri Museveni has said that Uganda has higher chances of rapid economic developments if investors are not delayed by politicians and civil servants who utter inflammatory statements that largely hinder investments in the country.

“Without more investments, economy will not grow. When you delay investors, you do disgrace to the people who could get job opportunities”, the President said.

He appealed to the people of Uganda to appreciate the tenets of investors and consumers as being the 2 key factors that characterize the development of the modern economy. He said an investor has the money and the knowledge to produce goods and services to supply and export while the consumer provides the market for the produced goods. He, therefore, asked politicians not to make mistakes in policy formulation and implementation which, he said, could adversely affect economic development.

Mr. Museveni also sounded a strong warning to civil servants against corruption and said it must stop. He noted that the completion of Bujagali hydro-power dam in Eastern Uganda and Nyagak mini-hydro-power plant in West Nile, among others, will go a long way in enhancing more economic development in Uganda

The President was last evening speaking during the wedding reception of Ismail Mpanga Bumba and Leila Naluwooza Mukasa at a wedding dinner reception held at Kampala Serena Hotel. The groom is the son of Hajji Abbey and Hajjat Saida Bbumba.

Mr. Museveni told guests that the wrong plans and decisions of politicians and civil servants that contribute to the disruption of the national economic development, is still a big challenge to the economy of Uganda. He asked the people of Uganda to take the advantage of the prevailing peace and work hard to enhance economic development.

He expressed happiness that young people, like Ismail, are getting married. He attributed this trend to the peace that is prevailing in the country which, he noted, is consolidated by the national army that is strong to defend the sovereignty of the nation. He assured the country that nobody will be allowed to disturb the peace and tranquility that the country is enjoying.

The President congratulated the newlywed couple for starting a family and gave them money equivalent to the value of 5 Frisian cows. He also thanked Hajjat Syda Bumba, mother of Ismail, for the good services rendered to the NRM government as a member of the Cabinet. He said that he gave the Ministerial portfolio to Hajat Bumba, an economist, because of her being a hard-working person.

He also thanked former Kampala Mayor, Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala currently a Senior Presidential Advisor, for fighting some groups of people that had nurtured intentions of making Kampala a war zone.

Former Minister Syda Bumba thanked the President for giving her a chance to serve in government. She said she had been inspired by President Museveni to join politics because of his ardent commitment to national development. She also commended him for taking off time from his busy schedule to attend the wedding reception of her son.

Hajji Abbey Bumba, husband to Hajjati Syda Bumba, highly commended President Museveni for honouring his family by attending the wedding reception of their son. He also expressed his gratitude to all the people that had contributed to making the occasion a success.
