President Museveni tours Kiboga District on Prosperity-For-All drive
26 - 2 - 2010

President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated the people of Kiboga district for their unwavering support to the NRM struggle that culminated in the liberation of the country and called on them to use the same spirit in eradicating household poverty. The President, who was yesterday in Kiboga district to mobilize and sensitise wananchi on the Government’s Prosperity-For-All Programme aimed at helping wanainchi to achieve both food and financial security in their homes, was addressing a big gathering that braved a heavy afternoon rain at Lwamata Sub-County headquarters. He paid tribute to the people of Kiboga district for supporting the protracted people’s armed struggle under the vanguard of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) that culminated in the 1986 victory. Mr. Museveni, however, told them that the remaining challenge is the eradication of household poverty. He advised them to engage in commercial farming saying that tarmac roads and other infrastructure alone that have been availed by the Movement government are not enough without adequate and sustainable household income.

The President, therefore, urged them to engage in poultry, dairy, and fruit farming activities along with piggery, bee keeping for honey and banana production that can earn them enough income which could enable them solve many household challenges.

“With enough income, one can afford to take his or her child to a private clinic or even to a private school,” he said.

The President was, however, dismayed to learn that out of 12,000 people in Lwamata Sub-County, only 369 had joined Savings and Credit Co-operative Organisations (SACCOs).  He strongly urged Lwamata Sub-County Chief to ensure that many residents join SACCOs to enable them benefit from that government arrangement of availing low interest funds to wananchi to be kick-started in production ventures that would yield them funds to grapple with their domestic challenges.

Responding to some of the issues raised by the LC1 Chairman, Mr. Edward Nkoyoyo, especially on lack of electricity in the rural areas, President Museveni advised the residents of Lwamata Sub-county to first increase incomes in their homes by engaging in commercial agriculture. He added that such income would enable them acquire solar systems besides accessing hydro-power electricity.

Addressing another rally at Kiboga district headquarters held in Kiboga Town Council, President Museveni reiterated his warning to arrest any head-teacher in UPE and USE schools who charges pupils school fees. He clarified that such charges are only levied in urban schools because of other utilities like water and electricity but not in rural based schools in the country.

“Rural schools are completely free. No charges should be levied on students and any teacher found charging students will be arrested”, he stressed.

State Minister for Micro Finance and Woman MP for Kiboga district, Mrs. Ruth Nankabirwa Sentamu, thanked President Museveni for establishing a Vocational School in Bukomero and also for the Kiboga-Busunju Highway tarmac.

Kiboga district LC5 Chairman, Mr. Siraj Nkugwe Kizito, thanked President Museveni for granting town council status to Lwamata.

Earlier, President Museveni visited the farm of Charles Kato of Bulyankuyege in Bukomero Sub-County. Charles Kato engages in mangoes, pineapples, bananas, poultry and cattle farming. He is able to earn Shs.45 million annually.

After the rally in Kiboga Town Council, the President visited the poultry farm of Mr. and Mrs. Kibuka Michael of Kilumba parish A Zone near Kiboga Town.
