President Yoweri Museveni is back home from Nairobi where he spent the day attending the 14th Extraordinary Summit of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The one-day summit that deliberated on matters attendant to the progress of the Peace Process in the Sudan impinging on the 2 parties to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was, chaired by President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya. The Summit was also attended by the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Mr. Meles Zenawi. The Khartoum Government was represented by the Sudanese 2nd Vice-President, Mr. Ali Osman Taha while Mr. Salva Kiir, who is also the 1st Vice President of Sudan, represented the Government of Southern Sudan. The Sudanese Comprehensive Agreement was a set of agreements culminating in January 2005 that was signed in Nairobi, Kenya between the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and the Government of Sudan based in Khartoum.
The Agreement was meant to end the second Sudanese civil war, develop democratic governance countrywide and share oil revenues. It further set a timetable by which Southern Sudan would have a referendum on its future.
President Museveni, who returned home this evening, was received at Entebbe International Airport by the Head of Public Service, Mr. John Mitala, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Bisherurwa Richard and the Mayor of Entebbe Mr. Steven Kabuye. E N D S
