President Yoweri Museveni has tasked the National Agricultural and Advisory Services (NAADS) to set conditional ties for the model farmers who benefit from the programme during the time of selecting the prospective beneficiaries. The President was speaking at a rally in Kyankwanzi yesterday on the last day of his 2-day popularization and sensitization tour of Kiboga district in his current Bonna Bagaggawale (Prosperity-For-All) programme in the Central Region. Mr. Museveni was reacting to a report by State Minister for Micro-Finance, Hon Ruth Nankabirwa, that model farmers, deny access to other farmers willing to learn from their projects and deny them access to the required information to enable them appreciate the fruits of the PFA programme. President directed the co-coordinators of NAADS in the area coordinators to set conditions for the selected farmers one of which should be granting free access of their farms to other farmers in their localities who wish to adopt the programme and implement it in their own areas, if the PFA programme is to have a reasonable impact.
Mr. Museveni also announced government’s plan to permanently wipe out malaria through the control of mosquitoes by employing both internal and external control methods.
“For one to actively engage in developmental activities, they must be healthy. We are going to distribute already treated mosquito nets. This treatment is effective for three years. At the same time we will employ the spraying method to completely tackle the problem”, he said.
The President reminded residents of how government has played its role of maintaining security, building the infrastructure, providing of free education for all, and how the rest lay in the hands of wananchi to ensure that they benefit from the development programmes that government has availed to the people as a basis for initiating development at the household level through earning regular incomes from projects that bring in money.
At another rally that was held at Ntunda Primary School in Ntunda Sub-County, the President asked residents to exercise patience as government deals with their local problems in a systematic manner adding that a lot of money is spent on general programs that benefit the entire population.
“Every year, we spent Shs.700 billion on UPE and USE alone for your children to study free. If we were not spending it on education, we would have taken care of all those problems that the LC1 Chairman has listed”, he noted.
On the low prices of maize in the area which is a result of over supplying, President Museveni emphasized the need for value addition to Uganda’s agricultural products through basic processing.
“The problem is that you have been selling maize in its raw form at Shs.180 a kilogramme yet a kilogramme of maize flour is at Shs.1,600 shillings. I am going to equip you with the necessary machinery to process the maize but it is going to be in groups so that you add value to the maize”, he assured them.
The colorful crowd, whose dress code was esanja, pledged their continued unconditional support to President Museveni and the NRM Party because, they argued, it is the only Party with a reliable leader.
Earlier, President Museveni toured Ssalongo Raphael Muwonge’s farm in Lwansaamu, who engages in commercial orange production, bananas and coffee farming. He also visited a piggery project in Ntunda Trading Centre. He donated cattle to the area’s farmers to help them get manure.
