About the Vice President




The Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya meets with Mr. Marc Hofstetter Dep. Exec. Dir. of Global Alliance of Vaccination & Immunization.

His Excellency the Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya, is a distinguished scholar and Doctor of Medicine, and an outstanding leader of solid grounding:

The Beginning:
Born in Wakiso district in May, 1949, Prof. Bukenya went against the odds stacked against him as a child in humble circumstances, to join the Makerere University Medical School in 1971.
Distinguished Scholar:
After accomplishing his medicinal degree and serving his internship in Uganda, Prof. Bukenya joined the prestigious Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene in London, 1981, and was awarded a postgraduate Diploma in Public Health a year later.

Ever the scholar, Prof. Bukenya went straight on to the Ross Institute, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and a Masters of Science in Community Health, both at the University of London.
There, he scored even higher successes for himself and Uganda, earning a mark of distinction for best performance in the MSC Programme at the University of London.

Eager to serve back home, Prof. Bukenya returned to Uganda in 1983 to lecture at the Institute of Public Health at Makerere University, but was poached a year later to lecture at the Department of Community Medicine, University of Papua New Guinea.

Within three years, the professor was appointed Head of Department and worked diligently for two years before returning to Uganda as Director of the Institute of Public Health at Makerere University.
In the same year, he accomplished his Doctorate of Philosophy in Public Health at the University of Queens land.

Leader:
In 1993, Prof. Bukenya became Associate Professor at the Institute, and then was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Makerere University in 1995.
The leader in Prof. Bukenya has been unmistakable over the years. From 1985 to 1991, he was 

Chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Environmental Health and Maternal and Child Health, in the Government of Papua New Guinea.
For the same duration, he was Chairman of the Board of Examiners of the College of Allied Health Sciences Health Inspectors’ Programme.

From 1992 to 1994, Prof. Bukenya was Vice-Chairman of the Network of7 African Postgraduate Public Health Training Schools in the WHO-Afro Region, and Chairman from 1994 to 1996.

Because of his professional distinction, the good professor has since June 1995 been an Associate Professor with the Tulane University School of Public Health in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, and since January this year, Adjunct Professor of International Health at the esteemed Case Western Reserve University, USA.

Exodus:
In July 1996, Prof. Bukenya responded to the call of the people in the constituency in which he was born and brought up, and offered himself as their representative to parliament. To this day, he has held their love and support, and the Busiro North seat.


During his tenure of service as an honorable MP, Prof. Bukenya emerged as Chairman of the Movement Caucus in the House, Minister of State for Trade, and Minister in charge of the Presidency in the Government of Uganda.
Having accomplished his charges to the satisfaction of the people and President of the Republic of Uganda, Prof. Bukenya was on May 23 appointed Vice President.

Sh10m Raised For Church Construction as VP Bukenya calls for Religious devotion

Over ten million shillings in cash and pledges was yesterday realised at a fundraising mass held at St. Mathias Catholic Church- Mbirizi in Masaka district. The money is part of the sh85million needed for roofing of the church building. Presiding over the function at the church site in Mbirizi, the Vice president Prof. Gilbert Bukenya called upon Ugandans to be proud of their religions, adding, that it is one way of cultivating a strong relationship with God.

The Vice President Prof Gilbert Bukenya has said that the West Nile Region can rid itself of low value crops that propagate poverty and engage in high income yielding crops and improve the social economic welfare of their community. At a meeting for West Nile district leaders at White Castle Hotel in Arua attended by various ministers including the Minister of State for Microfinance, Gen. Salim Saleh, Minister of State office of the Vice President James Baba, Minister of state for Lands, Kasirivu Atwooki, Minister of State for Finance Fred Omach, Minister of state for Fisheries Mukisa, Minister of state for the Environment Jesca Eriyo and for works Simon Ejua, Prof. Bukenya outlined the principles of the Prosperity for all programme initiated by President Yoweri Museveni to fight poverty at the grassroots.

China, Uganda to strengthen

The Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has said Uganda is eager to learn from China’s rapid industrial development and called for more investors in the textile and fruit processing sectors. Bukenya said industrialisation in Uganda will ensure value addition to Uganda’s locally grown products and promote their market value. He also called for more tourism ties between the two countries, adding that the current political and economic stability has led to a boost in the tourism sector and in foreign investments. Pope Benedict XVI, the leader of the Catholic Church has commended President Yoweri Museveni and the people of Uganda for the steps taken in the pacification of Northern Uganda and said the Church is willing to support government in its efforts to rehabilitate former child soldiers. The Popes’ message was delivered by Cardinal Renato Martino, the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace at the Vatican who paid a courtesy call on the Vice president professor Gilbert Bukenya at his office on Parliament Building in Kampala. Changing weather patterns have led to serious water scarcity for food production and forced communities in Nebbi district to massively destroy the trees for charcoal as alternative incomes. Thousands of rural farmers in Eastern Uganda may lose millions of shillings due to the biting draught and late rains that have severely affected their crops. Government hailed on PFA as VP Bukenya excites rural farmers on income projects. It was simple cow-matics… a choice for rural farmers to choose a single exotic cow that produces 15 – 20 litres of milk a day or keep 40 local cows to get the same amount of milk. The answer was unanimous, they all wanted an exotic cow. In Pallisa, farmers who rear local cows have been struggling with lack of water and pasture in the villages to keep their animals alive. This in addition to daily quarrels with neighbours over destroyed crops, cost of herdsmen and ropes to tether the animals have driven the cost of looking after the local animals high. ..more

President Yoweri Museveni has trashed claims that circumcised men are less prone to HIV/AIDS infections and warned that immorality was the major factor leading to increased infection rates in Uganda.
