Ever
the scholar, Prof. Bukenya went straight on to the
Ross Institute, London School of Hygiene &
Tropical Medicine, and a Masters of Science in
Community Health, both at the University of London.
There, he scored even higher successes for himself
and Uganda, earning a mark of distinction for best
performance in the MSC Programme at the University
of London.
Eager to serve back home, Prof. Bukenya returned to
Uganda in 1983 to lecture at the Institute of Public
Health at Makerere University, but was poached a
year later to lecture at the Department of Community
Medicine, University of Papua New Guinea.
Within three years, the professor was appointed Head
of Department and worked diligently for two years
before returning to Uganda as Director of the
Institute of Public Health at Makerere University.
In the same year, he accomplished his Doctorate of
Philosophy in Public Health at the University of Queens land.

Leader:
In 1993, Prof. Bukenya became Associate
Professor at the Institute, and then was
appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at
Makerere University in 1995.
The leader in Prof. Bukenya has been
unmistakable over the years. From 1985 to
1991, he was |

Chairman
of the National Advisory Committee on Environmental
Health and Maternal and Child Health, in the
Government of Papua New Guinea.
For the same duration, he was Chairman of the Board
of Examiners of the College of Allied Health
Sciences Health Inspectors’ Programme.
From
1992 to 1994, Prof. Bukenya was Vice-Chairman of the
Network of7 African Postgraduate Public Health
Training Schools in the WHO-Afro Region, and
Chairman from 1994 to 1996.
Because of his professional distinction, the good
professor has since June 1995 been an Associate
Professor with the Tulane University School of
Public Health in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, and
since January this year, Adjunct Professor of
International Health at the esteemed Case Western
Reserve University, USA.

Exodus:
In July 1996, Prof. Bukenya responded to the
call of the people in the constituency in
which he was born and brought up, and offered
himself as their representative to parliament.
To this day, he has held their love and
support, and the Busiro North seat.

During his tenure of service as an honorable
MP, Prof. Bukenya emerged as Chairman of the
Movement Caucus in the House, Minister of State for
Trade, and Minister in charge of the Presidency in
the Government of Uganda.
Having accomplished his charges to the satisfaction
of the people and President of the Republic of
Uganda, Prof. Bukenya was on May 23 appointed Vice
President.
Prof. Bukenya is married, with three children.
